Phototherapy

Phototherapy, or ultraviolet light treatment, can be used to treat a variety of skin disorders like psoriasis , vitiligo , atopic dermatitis and chronic eczema.

Phototherapy is a treatment that uses ultraviolet light to treat skin disorders such as psoriasis. The ultraviolet light slows down the growth of affected cells. These light treatments must be given on a regular basis over a period of time to produce results.

There are two types of phototherapy using different parts of the ultraviolet spectrum, UVB and UVA. Both are generally performed in a medical setting, and treatment can take from a few seconds to a few minutes.

UVB Phototherapy. UVB is generally the choice of phototherapy when the skin disorder is mild to moderate. There is broadband UVB and a newer narrowband UVB that only uses the most effective parts of UVB.

UVA Phototherapy. UVA penetrates more deeply into the skin, but is not effective on its own. It is generally combined with an oral or topical medication, so the treatment is generally labeled PUVA. PUVA is used to treat more severe skin disorders.

Side effects
Both can cause premature skin aging, general skin damage such as redness and dryness and an increased risk in skin cancer.

However when given in a guided and adequately dosed manner , it definitely outweighs other treatments.

Excimer laser

An excimer laser is basically a highly concentrated beam of UV light  of 308 nm, directed at vitiligo spots or patches, without affecting the pigmented skin around them.
Excimer laser works by stimulating the melanocytes in your skin. Melanocyte are the cells in your skin that produce melanin, a pigment that colors your skin and hair. Once your melanocytes have been stimulated by this treatment, they can resume normal production of melanin ,which will then cause a re-pigmentation of your skin, effectively treating vitiligo.
Recently approved by the FDA, the treatment is more expensive than other methods but has shown promising results in treating resistant vitiligo.
