 Erythema Ab Igne

It is caused by repetitive and prolonged exposure to moderate heat to the skin that is insufficient for producing burns characterised by reticulate hyperpigmentation, epidermal atrophy, and telangiectasias like a fish net.The lesions start on the skin as small pink patches but will progress into reddish or brown reticulated patterns, name itself shows its meaning that is redness from fire.

Mainly seen in those who used to resting laptop for longer time on the thighs, exposure to heated car seats, repeated application of hot water bottles, also seen in elderly people who sat too close to open fires or heat source Igne is a skin condition that is caused by long term exposure to heat.

jewellers, blacksmith, chefs, bakers are also prone to this disease because of the heat associated with their profession. It also represents a precancerous lesion, which may evolve into squamous cell carcinoma

Treatments

As such there is no effective methods available to treat EAI, but mild cases resolved by itself.

in Advanced cases

Topical fluorouracil or imiquimod.

Oral Mesoglycan and flavanoids has been shown effectiveness in treating the disease.

To prevent erythema ab igne, you must stay away from prolonged exposure to heat sources.  Do not sit to close to fires, wood stoves, or space heaters.  If you use water bottles for injuries, limit the amount of time that a water bottle is used.  Try not to place a laptop on the thighs when working as this can cause the thighs to have exposure to heat.   The underside of laptops is often 50 degrees C or higher, which many do not realize. Heated seats should not be used in vehicles all the time.  If you must use a heated seat, only use it until your body has warmed up enough and then switch it off.  If your job requires you to be close to an open heat source, such as a chef or a blacksmith, wear protective clothing so the skin is not exposed to the heat and take frequent breaks.

Ichthyosis Treatment

Several hours each day may need to be devoted the skin if ichthyosis is present in an individual. Daily, a person will need to take a shower or a bath. The skin should be exfoliated on a daily basis, and moisturised well. Moisturising ointments or creams may need to be prescribed by a dermatologist for the individual. Oral retinoids can be prescribed to reduce scaling. If a secondary infection occurs on the skin, oral antibiotics will need to be prescribed. Tips that will help keep the skin looking and feeling its best include applying a good quality lotion within 3 minutes of bathing. Apply to wet skin to keep moisture trapped into the skin. Products that contain lactic acid, alpha hydroxy acids and urea will help to keep skin not only moisturised but also exfoliated. Rubbing a wet pumice stone over crusty scales on the skin can help to remove them. Should there be scales on the scalp, brushing wet hair gently will aid in removing the scales.
